Tabby vs Splitwise

Last reviewed August 20, 2026

Splitwise has been the default expense splitter for over a decade, and it earned that. It’s reliable, flexible, and the app your group is most likely to already have. What changed is the free tier: since late 2023 it caps how many expenses you can add per day, shows ads, and keeps search, charts, receipt scanning, and currency conversion behind Splitwise Pro. The backlash on its store reviews is easy to find.

Tabby’s position is simple: the things you need every day (adding expenses, balances, search, charts, settling up) are free without caps or ads, and the paid tier exists only for AI. The assistant adds an expense from a sentence like “84 dollars for dinner, Jordan had the wine,” answers “who still owes me?”, and drafts settle-ups. It proposes, you confirm.

The verdict

If your group already lives on Splitwise and you split a bill a week, staying put is reasonable. The network effect is real and the web app is genuinely useful. But if you split often enough to hit the daily cap, or you’re tired of ads and paying $4.99 a month for search, Tabby gives you the everyday features free and reserves its subscription for AI that Splitwise simply doesn’t have. Moving a group over takes a CSV export and a few minutes.

Prices and limits checked August 2026 (Splitwise Pro pricing from its US App Store listing; the daily cap is confirmed by Splitwise’s help center but the exact number is unpublished). Check the current listings before deciding.

Pricing Splitting, balances, search, and charts are free with no ads and no limits. Tabby Pro ($9.99/mo or $79.99/yr) only adds the AI assistant and receipt scanning. Free tier has ads and a daily expense cap. Splitwise Pro is $4.99/mo (about $30 to $40 per year) and unlocks search, charts, receipt scanning, and removes the limits.

Why switch to Tabby

  • No daily cap and no ads. Log every coffee and cab without hitting a wall.
  • Search and spending charts are free. On Splitwise, both sit behind Pro.
  • The AI assistant adds an expense from a plain sentence, answers who owes what, and drafts settle-ups. You confirm everything before it lands.
  • Receipt scanning reads the line items and drafts the itemized split, instead of leaving you to assign everything by hand.
  • Pending payments: track hotel holds and deposits without them distorting anyone's balance.
  • Switching is quick. Export a group from Splitwise as CSV and import it into Tabby in a few minutes.

Where Splitwise is strong

  • Your friends probably already have it, and that matters for a shared app.
  • A full web app. Tabby is mobile-only for now.
  • Splitwise Pro is cheaper than Tabby Pro ($4.99/mo vs $9.99/mo). They just buy different things.
  • Free per-group CSV export from the web app, which Tabby doesn't offer yet.

Frequently asked questions

Is Tabby free?

Yes. Tracking, splitting, settling up, search, and charts are free, with no ads and no daily limit. Tabby Pro ($9.99/mo or $79.99/yr) only adds the AI assistant and receipt scanning, and you can ignore it entirely.

How does the price compare to Splitwise Pro?

Splitwise Pro is cheaper: $4.99/mo vs $9.99/mo for Tabby Pro. But they buy different things. Splitwise Pro mostly removes restrictions (the daily cap, ads, paywalled search and charts) that Tabby never had. Tabby Pro buys AI features Splitwise doesn't offer at any price.

Does Splitwise limit how many expenses you can add?

On the free tier, yes. Splitwise confirms a daily limit exists in its help center but doesn't publish the number; user reports put it around 3 expenses per day. Tabby has no limit.

Does Splitwise show ads?

The free tier shows ads and Splitwise Pro removes them. Tabby has no ads on any tier.

Can I move my Splitwise groups to Tabby?

Yes. Export a group from Splitwise as a CSV file and import it in Tabby. Expenses, payments, and members come across, and members who aren't on Tabby yet are created as guests they can claim later.

Does Splitwise have AI?

No. As of 2026 the Splitwise app has no AI features. Tabby Pro includes receipt scanning that reads line items and an assistant that adds expenses, answers balance questions, and drafts settle-ups from plain language, with you confirming each change.
